Where budding chefs and future military leaders learn philosophy, too
The Hechinger's Report Jon Marcus speaks with American RadioWorks near how, at a time when the liberal arts are under assault, some surprising institutions—including the U.S. War machine Academy at West Point and the Culinary Institute of America—are non only hanging on to, but expanding them.
That'southward what employers say they need in their new hires, too. 3-quarters want more emphasis on critical thinking, problem-solving, written and oral communication, and applied cognition, according to a survey of 318 corporate leaders by the Association of American Colleges and Universities— exactly the kinds of skills advocates for the liberal arts say they teach.
Ninety-three per centum agree that "a demonstrated capacity to remember critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems" is more important than a job candidate's undergraduate major.
